"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous admirers have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
