Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
